Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis is a sight-threatening condition predominantly affecting immunocompromised individuals, such as those with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). We aimed to present an observational case report on CMV retinitis following Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and to review the literature on the molecular and cellular changes in CMV and SARS-CoV-2 infections and how they may influence each other. A 32-year-old man with a history of AIDS presented with decreased vision and ocular pain exacerbated by movement, beginning a day prior.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined the effects of gut microbiota-targeted interventions like probiotics and dietary changes on metabolic health in individuals with diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome, focusing on parameters like glucose and cholesterol levels.
  • - A systematic review of 41 clinical trials found that these interventions significantly lowered fasting glucose, HbA1c, cholesterol, and triglycerides, with probiotics and synbiotics showing the best results while FMT had variable outcomes.
  • - Short-duration interventions caused quick changes in gut bacteria but limited metabolic benefits, whereas longer interventions led to greater improvements in metabolic health.

Article Synopsis
  • Pregnant individuals are at higher risk for infections like COVID-19, which can lead to serious complications for both the mother and fetus, including preterm birth and developmental issues.
  • Research is ongoing to understand the long-term effects of maternal COVID-19 infection on children's cognitive and developmental outcomes, suggesting potential risks such as ADHD and autism.
  • Early diagnosis and management of infections during pregnancy are crucial to improving health outcomes for both mothers and their children, highlighting the need for continued monitoring and research.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a major cause of mortality globally, emphasizing the need for early detection and effective risk assessment to improve patient outcomes. Advances in oculomics, which utilize the relationship between retinal microvascular changes and systemic vascular health, offer a promising non-invasive approach to assessing CVD risk. Retinal fundus imaging and optical coherence tomography/angiography (OCT/OCTA) provides critical information for early diagnosis, with retinal vascular parameters such as vessel caliber, tortuosity, and branching patterns identified as key biomarkers.

Previous correlative and modeling approaches indicate influences of environmental factors on COVID-19 spread through atmospheric conditions' impact on virus survival and transmission or host susceptibility. However, causal connections from environmental factors to the pandemic, mediated by human mobility, received less attention. We use the technique of Convergent Cross Mapping to identify the causal connections, beyond correlation at the country level, between pairs of variables associated with weather conditions, human mobility, and the number of COVID-19 cases for 32 European states.
