Under suitable conditions, roseoflavin [7-methyl-8-dimethylamino-10-(1'-D-ribityl)isoalloxazine] replaces riboflavin to about 80% in the photoreceptor of Phycomyces. The substitute-bearing photoreceptor functions with an efficiency of about 0.1% of that of the normal receptor.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA gentic instability in Phycomyces is described that appears to be associated with a single nuclear gene, dar. The wild type is able to take up riboflavin and its toxic analogue, deaza-riboflavin, from nanomolar concentrations in the medium. The mutants are unable to take up riboflavin and are resistant to deaza-riboflavin.
