Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the HDL-C/ApoA-I index as a potential marker for atherosclerosis and its relationship with cardiometabolic risk factors in a sample of 1,363 individuals aged 20-75, none of whom had coronary heart disease or diabetes.
  • Results show that lower HDL-C/ApoA-I index values are linked to higher prevalence of adverse conditions like metabolic syndrome, fatty liver, and coronary artery calcification (CAC).
  • The findings suggest that the HDL-C/ApoA-I index could serve as a practical biomarker for assessing cardiometabolic risks and subclinical atherosclerosis in adults.

Background: Systemic arterial hypertension is linked to a heightened risk of cardiovascular diseases on a global scale. In Mexico, nearly half of adults in vulnerable conditions experience hypertension. Imbalance in the oral and intestinal microbiota composition has been observed in patients with hypertension, documented by a decrease of bacteria producing short-chain fatty acids, which play a critical role in blood pressure regulation.

Background: adipose tissue dysfunction is a key factor for diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) development. Chia (Salvia hispanica) is an abundant source of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and fiber which could improve adipose tissue functionality. Aim: to analyze the effect of an isocaloric chia-supplemented diet on glucose metabolism, adipose tissue inflammation, and endothelial function markers in patients with NAFLD and early stages of diabetes.

Previously, it has been reported that hypoalphalipoproteinemia (HA) is associated with rs17574 DDP4 polymorphism. Considering that in diabetic patients, HA is often present and is a risk factor for premature coronary artery disease (pCAD), the study aimed to evaluate the association of this polymorphism with pCAD in diabetic individuals. We genotyped the rs17574 polymorphism in 405 pCAD patients with T2DM, 736 without T2DM, and 852 normoglycemic individuals without pCAD and T2DM as controls.
