Cystoscopic Guided Laser Cauterization in a Dog with Complete Y-Type Urethral Duplication.

Duplication of the urethra is a rare congenital malformation. A 14-month-old, sexually intact, male, Lagotto dog with complete Y-type urethral duplication was subjected to accessory urethra treatment for cystoscopic guided laser cauterization, with a 10-Watt diode laser with 550-micron fiber and 2.3 Fr outer diameter.

Microbial Isolates from Vegetable Foreign Bodies Inhaled by Dogs.

Grass-seed inhalation is a common problem in canine patients, in particular during summer months, migrating in upper and lower respiratory tract. Grass awns can harbor bacteria and fungi, causing grass seeds foreign body-related disease (GSFBD). Aim of this study was to investigate the aerobic microbial flora isolated from grass awns extracted from 41 dogs with GSFBD and the antibiotic susceptibility of the isolated bacterial strains.

Rifaximin is an effective alternative to metronidazole for the treatment of chronic enteropathy in dogs: a randomised trial.

Background: A clinical trial was conducted in order to assess the efficacy of rifaximin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic with negligible gastrointestinal absorption, in comparison with metronidazole, a commonly employed antimicrobial drug, in dogs with chronic enteropathy. Twenty-four pet dogs were randomly enrolled into two different groups: MET group (10 dogs) and RIF group (14 dogs). Dogs of MET group received metronidazole 15 mg/kg q12h for 21 days by oral route, whereas dogs of RIF group, were given rifaximin 25 mg/kg q12h for 21 days by oral route.

Cell adhesion molecules in cord blood hematopoietic progenitors.

We investigated the expression of different cell adhesion molecules on cord blood (CB) and bone marrow (BM) CD34+/CD38+ and CD34+/CD38- cells. CD11a and CD62L were more expressed in CB than in BM CD34+/CD38- subset, suggesting a possible advantage in homing and engraftment. A short exposure to various cytokines increased CD62L expression only in the more differentiated CB and BM CD34+/CD38+ cells.

Use of recombinant granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in Fanconi's anemia.

Background And Objective: Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) has been shown to improve the neutropenic status of patients with bone marrow failure. The side effects in prolonged treatment still need to be determined.

Design And Methods: We have studied the efficacy and the long-term side effects of G-CSF in four patients with Fanconi's anemia and severe neutropenia.
