Public health education at the University of Florida: synergism and educational innovation.

The College of Public Health and Health Professions at the University of Florida is composed of five public health departments and four clinical health professions departments, and the college is one of six that make up the university's Health Science Center. These organizational resources, along with the university's explicit emphasis on collaboration across professions, colleges, institutes, and centers and the strong leadership and full support of deans and other academic leaders, provide a strong foundation for educational innovations. Three key areas in which the college has built upon these opportunities are interprofessional education, development of One Health instructional programs, and application of cutting-edge technology to students' educational experiences.

Obesity and postpartum depression: does prenatal care utilization make a difference?

To identify (1) the association between pre-pregnancy BMI (PP-BMI) and PPD symptoms, and (2) the association between PP-BMI and PPD symptoms after considering PNC utilization as a moderating variable. Data from the 2004 and 2005 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) were analyzed from 15 states. The study design utilized two risk-adjustment approaches.

Birth weight as a risk factor for breast cancer: a meta-analysis of 18 epidemiological studies.

Background: Birth weight has been identified as a birth-related factor associated with the risk of breast cancer. However, the evidence is inconsistent.

Methods: To investigate the association between birth weight and breast cancer, we conducted a meta-analysis of published studies between 1996 and 2008.

Model indicators for maternal and child health: an overview of process, product, and applications.

Objectives: Further improvements in the health of mothers and children depend, in part, on collecting, analyzing, and interpreting relevant data correctly. Despite consistent efforts to improve data capacity and use during the past two decades, the need persists for a model set of maternal and child health (MCH) indicators to guide decisions about health conditions to be monitored, elements to be included in data sets, and definitions of measures. This article describes development, key characteristics, and major applications of a set of MCH Model Indicators (MCH MI) created to address these needs.
