Purpose Of Review: This review aims to determine whether muscle mass and function can be effectively maintained without relying on animal-based protein sources. We evaluate the quality, digestibility, and essential amino acid profiles of plant-based proteins to understand their potential in preventing and managing sarcopenia.

Recent Finding: Recent studies indicate that while animal-based proteins have traditionally been considered the gold standard for supporting muscle protein synthesis, certain plant-based protein blends, fortified with leucine or other essential amino acids, can produce comparable anabolic responses.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects both grey and white matter (WM), but considerably more is known about the former. Interestingly, WM disruption has been consistently observed and thoroughly described using imaging modalities, particularly MRI which has shown WM functional disconnections between the hippocampus and other brain regions during AD pathogenesis when early neurodegeneration and synapse loss are also evident. Nonetheless, high-resolution structural and functional analyses of WM during AD pathogenesis remain scarce.

Article Synopsis
  • Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a disease where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves, making it hard for muscles to work properly, and researchers tested a high-dose chemotherapy treatment on a patient with severe MG who didn’t get better with other treatments.
  • The patient received chemotherapy and a procedure to help her immune system recover, and after this treatment, she started feeling better really quickly and stayed symptom-free for a long time.
  • The study suggests that this new treatment may help some people with severe MG, and there's interest in doing more research to see if it works for others with the same problem.
