Article Synopsis
  • Myeloid cells use transmembrane protein receptors to identify and distinguish between different types of ligands, playing a vital role in immune responses.
  • C-type lectin receptors (CLRs), particularly Dectin-1 and Dectin-2, have a key structural motif called the C-type lectin-like domain (CTLD) that allows them to recognize a variety of biological molecules, including glycans, proteins, and lipids.
  • This review focuses on the latest findings related to the expression, signaling pathways, and immune functions of Dectin clusters, emphasizing their critical roles in immune cell activity.

Article Synopsis
  • Neutrophil activation needs careful control to prevent diseases, as uncontrolled neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) can cause more harm than good.
  • A receptor called MICL helps keep this process in check by recognizing DNA in NETs, and when it doesn't work properly, it can lead to too many NETs being formed.
  • In diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, there are autoantibodies that block MICL, which worsens the disease, but during certain infections, like with a fungus, having more NETs can actually help fight off the infection.

In bacteria, as in other microorganisms, surface compounds interact with different pattern recognition receptors expressed by host cells, which usually triggers a variety of cellular responses that result in immunomodulation. The S-layer is a two-dimensional macromolecular crystalline structure formed by (glyco)-protein subunits that covers the surface of many species of Bacteria and almost all Archaea. In Bacteria, the presence of S-layer has been described in both pathogenic and non-pathogenic strains.

Lentilactobacillus kefiri is one of the main lactic acid bacteria species in kefir and it was also isolated from other fermented foods. Numerous strains have been isolated and characterized regarding its potential as probiotics for the development of novel functional foods. To our knowledge this is the first review focused on highlighting safety aspects and health beneficial effects reported for L.

Preterm birth (PTB), defined as birth occurring before 37 weeks of pregnancy, affects 5-18% of pregnancies and is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although PTB is considered a syndrome, infection-induced inflammation accounts for up to 50% of all cases. Despite the effort to reduce the incidence of PTB, it continues to rise worldwide and current approaches for preventing or treating PTB are largely unsatisfactory.
