Are multidisciplinary journals truly multidisciplinary, and, how has the multidisciplinary character of these journals evolved over the long term? Here, we assess these questions by analyzing data from the Journal Citation Reports. We examined 983,246 articles and reviews published between 1980 and 2021 in 127 journals categorized under 'Multidisciplinary Sciences'. We found that the representation of the main branches of knowledge in multidisciplinary journals was uneven and, in general, not proportional to the global research effort dedicated to each branch.

The European wildcat (Felis silvestris), particularly its Iberian lineage, is experiencing an important population decline due to various threats. For this reason, we started in 2017 an intensive monitoring of a population of this species in southeastern Spain. Freshwater megafauna, such as sturgeons, giant catfishes, river dolphins, hippopotami, crocodylians, large turtles, and giant salamanders, have experienced severe population declines and range contractions worldwide. Although there is an increasing number of studies investigating the causes of megafauna losses in fresh waters, little attention has been paid to synthesising the impacts of megafauna on the abiotic environment and other organisms in freshwater ecosystems, and hence the consequences of losing these species. This limited understanding may impede the development of policies and actions for their conservation and restoration.
