Narratives of crisis: From affective structures to adaptive functions.

This commentary focuses on affective structures and the main adaptive functions of shared narratives to fill the gaps of the Conviction Narrative Theory. The transmission of narratives among individuals in highly uncertain situations is irrevocably tainted by affects and anchored in collective memory. Narratives have important evolutionary functions for human beings under threat and act as the social glue that creates and strengthens social bonds among individuals.

[Dislocation of the knee with isolated posterior cruciate ligament rupture].

We report a case of posterior femorotibial dislocation with an isolated lesion of the posterior cruciate ligament. Outcome was favorable after reduction and conservative treatment for six weeks and was satisfactory at six months follow-up. Acceptable functional results can be obtained after non-operative treatment of this very severe knee injury.

Postpartum cerebral angiopathy associated with the administration of sumatriptan and dihydroergotamine--a case report.

Cerebral angiopathy of the postpartum period is a rare entity, sometimes promoted by vasoconstrictives drug prescription. Its clinical presentation includes headaches, seizures and focal neurological deficits, which develop shortly after a normal pregnancy. The diagnosis is based on clinical findings and angiography, showing multiple narrowing of the intracranial cerebral arteries.

Pulmonary anthracosis in children.

We report two cases of children with malignancies and subpleural nodules found on computed tomography (CT) scan. In both cases the diagnosis was anthracosis. This pathologic condition has never been reported in children.

Surgical management of Candida suppurative thrombophlebitis of superior vena cava after central venous catheterization.

Septic deep venous thrombosis is a major complication associated with central venous catheterization in intensive care units. The most common causative organisms are Staphylococcus aureus, gram-negative bacilli and Candida species. The incidence of Candida infections is increasing, especially in intensive care patients receiving total parenteral nutrition and long-term broad-spectrum antibiotics.
