Teaching Atraumatic Soft Tissue Handling in the Simulation Laboratory: Development of a Novel Training System.

Atraumatic soft issue handling is essential for optimal wound healing. Simulation is a safe and effective way to improve surgical skills outside the operating room. Our primary aim was the development of a pressure-sensing forceps that measures the force applied to a given tissue and provides real-time biofeedback.

Carbon Monoxide-Related Vision Loss in an Acute Burn Patient.

Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur as part of smoke exposure in the burn population. Here we report the case of a 32-year-old, previously healthy male, with carbon monoxide-related blindness after smoke exposure in an apartment fire. Cerebral hypoperfusion was diagnosed using magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, and the patient was diagnosed with cortical visual impairment.

Outcomes in Stevens-Johnson Syndrome/Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Patients Treated With a Medicine-Led Multidisciplinary Approach.

Patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) have traditionally been treated in burn centers. Our burn center's approach differs by admitting these patients to a medicine service, with support from the burn team. The aim of this study was to determine whether SJS/TEN patients cared for with our system, with burn involvement but not burn admission, demonstrate equivalent outcomes.

A Systematic Review on Participant Diversity in Clinical Trials-Have We Made Progress for the Management of Obesity and Its Metabolic Sequelae in Diet, Drug, and Surgical Trials.

Objective: Individuals from Black and Hispanic backgrounds represent a minority of the overall US population, yet are the populations most affected by the disease of obesity and its comorbid conditions. Black and Hispanic individuals remain underrepresented among participants in obesity clinical trials, despite the mandate by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Revitalization Act of 1993. This systematic review evaluates the racial, ethnic, and gender diversity of clinical trials focused on obesity at a national level.
