Article Synopsis
  • * Results showed that higher NLR values were significantly associated with increased mortality rates at both 30 days (5.2%) and 180 days (10.8%) post-surgery, especially in patients aged 65 and younger.
  • * The findings suggest that preoperative NLR can help predict mortality risk, with both NLR and age being significant factors in determining patient outcomes after emergency surgery.

The increasing participation of photovoltaic sources in power grids presents the challenge of enhancing power quality, which is affected by the intrinsic characteristics of these sources, such as variability and lack of inertia. This power quality degradation mainly generates variations in both voltage magnitude and frequency, which are more pronounced in microgrids. In fact, the magnitude problem is particularly present in the distribution systems, where photovoltaic sources are spread along the grid.

Article Synopsis
  • Soil bacterial communities are important for soil stability and interact with local climates and soil depths, affecting their diversity across different environments.
  • An innovative DNA separation method was used to analyze microbial communities in various climates along the Chilean Coastal Cordillera, revealing that intracellular DNA (iDNA) diversity increased with soil moisture, peaking in slightly deeper layers in arid conditions.
  • The study found that soil pH and moisture are critical in shaping bacterial communities, with different bacterial taxa associated with distinct environmental conditions; eDNA communities were more environmentally correlated than iDNA communities.

Objective: To show the experience of a Latin American public hospital, with SNM in the management of either OAB, NOUR or FI, reporting feasibility, short to medium-term success rates, and complications.

Methods: A retrospective cohort was conducted using data collected prospectively from patients with urogynecological conditions and referred from colorectal surgery and urology services between 2015 and 2022.

Results: Advanced or basic trial phases were performed on 35 patients, 33 (94%) of which were successful and opted to move on Implantable Pulse Generator (GG) implantation.

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a heterogeneous disease characterized by constitutional symptoms, multi-organ dysfunction, and a subacute to chronic mode of onset. We describe a rarely encountered manifestation of PAN in a previously healthy 64-year-old woman who developed acute intra-abdominal bleeding due to multi-vessel, vasculitis-induced retroperitoneal aneurysmal ruptures, followed by the spontaneous cessation of abdominal pain and intra-abdominal bleeding within 24 hours after hospitalization, in the absence of immunosuppressive treatment. Aneurysms regressed and eventually normalized coincident with a moderate-term course of oral corticosteroids and six months of monthly intravenous cyclophosphamide.
