Untargeted metabolomics reveals the effects of pre-analytic storage on serum metabolite profiles from healthy cats.

Untargeted metabolomics investigations have characterized metabolic disturbances associated with various diseases in domestic cats. However, the pre-analytic stability of serum metabolites in the species is unknown. Our objective was to compare serum metabolomes from healthy cats stored at -20°C for up to 12 months to samples stored at -80°C.

Untargeted Analysis of Serum Metabolomes in Dogs with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency.

Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is a malabsorptive syndrome resulting from insufficient secretion of pancreatic digestive enzymes. EPI is treated with pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT), but the persistence of clinical signs, especially diarrhea, is common after treatment. We used untargeted metabolomics of serum to identify metabolic disturbances associated with EPI and generate novel hypotheses related to its pathophysiology.

Abruption of Abdominal Pregnancy Following Blunt Trauma.

Abdominal pregnancy represents a rare subset of ectopic pregnancy with a reported incidence around one per 10,000 live births. It is associated with high fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality. In this case, we describe a 25-year-old primigravida female who presented as a trauma activation with acute hypotension following blunt trauma to the abdomen and who was found to have a viable abdominal pregnancy with placental abruption.

Constant temperature and fluctuating temperature have distinct effects on hypoxia tolerance in killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus).

Climate change is leading to rapid change in aquatic environments, increasing the mean and variability of temperatures, and increasing the incidence of hypoxia. We investigated how acclimation to constant temperatures or to diel temperature fluctuations affects hypoxia tolerance in mummichog killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus). Killifish were acclimated to constant cool (15°C), constant warm (25°C) or a diel temperature cycle (15°C at night, 25°C during day) for 6 weeks.
