Severe chronic respiratory distress accompanied by pregnancy is not rare. It means that the fetus is at risk of being born prematurely and with intra-uterine growth retardation and the mother, apart from the obstetric complications that she is likely to suffer, has the chance of becoming decompensated as far as her cardiac and respiratory systems are concerned. There is therefore a very real need for assisted respiration.

In this review, the results obtained in commercial livestock with certain beta-adrenergic agonists (clenbuterol and cimaterol) having an anabolic potential associated with lipid mobilizing properties are considered. The first chapter summarizes major data concerning the effects of beta-agonists on growth and carcass composition in cattle, sheep and pigs. The effect of clenbuterol and cimaterol on carcass quality is to increase the deposition of protein while reducing fat accretion.
