The cardiovascular safety from azithromycin in the treatment of several infectious diseases has been challenged. In this prespecified pooled analysis of 2 multicenter randomized clinical trials, we aimed to assess whether the use of azithromycin might lead to corrected QT (QTc) interval prolongation or clinically relevant ventricular arrhythmias. In the COALITION COVID Brazil I trial, 667 patients admitted with moderate COVID-19 were randomly allocated to hydroxychloroquine, hydroxychloroquine plus azithromycin, or standard of care.

Article Synopsis
  • Depression negatively impacts adherence to direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), which can increase stroke risk.
  • A study analyzed data from over 101,000 individuals with AF, revealing that those with depression had 11% lower odds of adequate adherence and 12% lower odds of optimal adherence to DOACs compared to those without depression.
  • The study concluded that addressing depression in AF patients is important for enhancing medication adherence and potentially lowering stroke risk, but depression did not affect adherence to warfarin.

Importance: Depression is associated with increased risk of primary and secondary cardiovascular events. Medication adherence may play an essential role.

Objective: To evaluate the association of depression and 12-month adherence to guideline-directed medical therapies (eg, antiplatelet agents, β-blockers, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors [ie, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers], and statins) following percutaneous coronary intervention.
