The IUCN classifies two-endemic fishes of the Western Ghats in Peninsular India: Nilgiri mystus Hemibagrus punctatus is critically endangered, and Yellow catfish Horabagrus brachysoma is vulnerable. These are threatened by habitat degradation, excess fishing, and dam construction. ICAR-NBFGR, the premier research organisation in India for fish conservation, aims to conserve these two species through captive propagation, stock identification, and stock-specific ranching programs.

Evaluation of environmental effects on reproductive characteristics of Mangalarga Marchador mares in a commercial embryo transfer program.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the environmental effects on embryo recovery rate and pregnancy rate of Mangalarga Marchador mares. The reproductive characteristics of donor and recipient mares were evaluated during five years in Brazilian tropical environment. The mares were used throughout the year and seasons were classified as: October to April (breeding season - BS); May (autumn transition out of the breeding season - ATBS); June to August (non-breeding season - nBS); and September (vernal transition into the breeding season - VTBS).

Anatomical and surgical aspects of splenic segmentectomies.

Based upon the anatomicosurgical segments of the spleen, suggested by DiDio and demonstrated in cadavers, classified and named by Neder (1958) and Zappalá (1958, 1959, 1963), the normal segmental organization was anatomically and radiologically confirmed in 51 human spleens, after studying corrosion casts and radiograms of intraparenchymal vessels (Christo, 1959 a, b, 1960, 1962, 1963, 1993). From 1958 to 1965, pioneer segmental resections were performed successfully in 34 dogs and in 9 patients to safely remove traumatic injured splenic segments. At the same time, the overwhelming postsplenectomy infection (OPSI) became well identified.

Giant haemangioma of the thigh (Kasabach-Merritt syndrome): resection with temporary clamping of the common iliac artery.

A giant haemangioma of the thigh in a 9-month-old infant girl with the Kasabach-Merritt syndrome was operated upon with temporary clamping of the common iliac artery after previous attempts at treatment with external compression, prednisone and radiotherapy had failed. Secondary lymphoedema of the leg and foot appeared later and was successfully treated by Thompson's technique.
