In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, SKS1 mRNA encoding a glucose-sensing serine/threonine kinase belongs to "nucleus-retained" (NR) mRNAs representing a subset of otherwise normal transcripts, which exhibits slow nuclear export and excessively long nuclear dwell time. Nuclear retention of the SKS1 mRNA triggered by a 202 nt "export-retarding" nuclear zip code (NZ) element promotes its rapid degradation in the nucleus by the nuclear exosome/CTEXT. In this investigation, we demonstrate that Dbp2p, an ATP-dependent DEAD-box RNA helicase binds to SKS1 and other NR-mRNAs and thereby inhibits their export by antagonizing with the binding of the export factors Mex67p/Yra1p.

Nuclear degradation of aberrant mRNAs in Saccharomyces cerevisiae is accomplished by the nuclear exosome and its cofactors TRAMP/CTEXT. Evidence from this investigation establishes a universal role of the Nrd1p-Nab3p-Sen1p (NNS) complex in the nuclear decay of all categories of aberrant mRNAs. In agreement with this, both nrd1-1 and nrd1-2 mutations impaired the decay of all classes of aberrant messages.

Bilateral hypoxic-ischaemic thalamic lesions are a rare type of neonatal encephalopathy with characteristic but often misinterpreted clinical features. This article describes history, clinical and diagnostic findings in a preterm and a term infant with hypoxic-ischaemic thalamic lesions after severe and abrupt intrauterine hypoxia. Both neonates presented with absent suckling and swallowing whereas other cranial nerves were unaffected.

Unlabelled: Congenital cystic adenomatoid lung malformation (CCAM) is a rare disorder characterized by replacement of normal pulmonary tissue with cysts of variable size and distribution. Only sporadic cases of CCAM type III have been described that were stillborn or died in the early neonatal period. To our best knowledge we report the first infant with bilateral CCAM type III that was not ventilator-dependent for the first 10 weeks of life and survived until the age of 5 months.
