Article Synopsis
  • Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare genetic disorder marked by varying symptoms and significant chromosome fragility, leading to severe health issues like cancer and bone marrow failure.
  • The Spanish Registry of Patients with FA gathered data from 227 patients over 30 years, revealing an 86% cumulative cancer incidence by age 50, with outcomes differing based on chromosome fragility and specific gene mutations.
  • Findings suggest that patients with mutations allowing some protein function (genetic hypomorphism) tend to have better health outcomes, indicating potential for new therapies that could enhance mutant FA protein function to improve patient prognosis.

Patients with advanced-stage Hodgkin lymphoma treated with ABVD who have a positive interim FDG-PET (iPET) have a poor prognosis. Escalation to BEACOPP has been shown to improve progression-free survival (PFS). However, randomized trials are lacking to determine the best strategy for intensification.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and its Member States have been leading the efforts to eradicate wild poliovirus in the Region of Americas since smallpox's successful elimination in 1971. The region became the first to be certified free of wild poliovirus in 1994. However, in July 2022, an unvaccinated patient with no recent travel history was diagnosed with poliomyelitis in the United States of America.

Minichromosome Maintenance 8 Homologous Recombination Repair Factor (MCM8) and Minichromosome Maintenance 9 Homologous Recombination Repair Factor (MCM9) are recently discovered minichromosome maintenance proteins and are implicated in multiple DNA-related processes and pathologies, including DNA replication (initiation), meiosis, homologous recombination and mismatch repair. Consistent with these molecular functions, variants of may predispose carriers to disorders such as infertility and cancer and should therefore be included in relevant diagnostic testing. In this overview of the (patho)physiological functions of MCM8 and MCM9 and the phenotype of variant carriers, we explore the potential clinical implications of variant carriership and highlight important future directions of MCM8 and MCM9 research.

We evaluated the associations between marine recreational fishing, stress, seafood consumption, and sleep quality in a cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey of a convenience sample of 244 fishers recruited in 2019 in Spain. Fishers' stress levels were moderate, with a mean stress index score of 36.4 units on a scale from 14 (very low stress) to 70 (very high).
