Hybrid maize seed production in Africa is dependent upon manual detasseling of the female parental lines, often resulting in plant damage that can lead to reduced seed yields on those detasseled lines. Additionally, incomplete detasseling can result in hybrid purity issues that can lead to production fields being rejected. A unique nuclear genetic male sterility seed production technology, referred to as Ms44-SPT, was developed to avoid hybrid seed loss and to improve the purity and quality of hybrid maize production.

Unlabelled: Cable bacteria, filamentous sulfide oxidizers that live in sulfidic sediments, are at times associated with large flocks of swimming bacteria. It has been proposed that these flocks of bacteria transport electrons extracellularly to cable bacteria via an electron shuttle intermediate, but the identity and activity of these bacteria in freshwater sediment remain mostly uninvestigated. Here, we elucidate the electron exchange capabilities of the bacterial community by coupling metagenomics and metatranscriptomics to 16S rRNA amplicon-based correlations with cable bacteria over 155 days.

Vast amounts of pathogen genomic, demographic and spatial data are transforming our understanding of SARS-CoV-2 emergence and spread. We examined the drivers of molecular evolution and spread of 291,791 SARS-CoV-2 genomes from Denmark in 2021. With a sequencing rate consistently exceeding 60%, and up to 80% of PCR-positive samples between March and November, the viral genome set is broadly whole-epidemic representative.
