Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is the causative agent for chickenpox and herpes zoster (HZ, shingles). HZ is a debilitating disease affecting elderly and immunocompromised populations. Glycoprotein E (gE) is indispensable for viral replication and cell-to-cell spread and is the primary target for anti-VZV antibodies.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) glycoprotein B (gB) is a class III membrane fusion protein required for viral entry. HCMV vaccine candidates containing gB have demonstrated moderate clinical efficacy, but no HCMV vaccine has been approved. Here, we used structure-based design to identify and characterize amino acid substitutions that stabilize gB in its metastable prefusion conformation.

How Can Spatial Transcriptomic Profiling Advance Our Understanding of Skin Diseases?

Spatial transcriptomic (ST) profiling is the mapping of gene expression within cell populations with preservation of positional context and represents an exciting new approach to develop our understanding of local and regional influences upon skin biology in health and disease. With the ability to probe from a few hundred transcripts to the entire transcriptome, multiple ST approaches are now widely available. In this paper, we review the ST field and discuss its application to dermatology.

Two vaccines, 4CMenB and MenB-fHbp, that protect against MenB are available and include one or two forms respectively of factor H binding protein (fHbp), a key protective antigen.
