In this paper, a numerical and experimental study of the shock absorption properties of bike helmets is presented. Laboratory compression and tensile tests were carried out on samples of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and polycarbonate (PC), respectively constituting the internal shock absorption layer and the external hard shell of composite helmets. The measured responses of the two materials were then exploited to calibrate the relevant elasto-plastic constitutive models, adopted in full-scale finite element analyses of a helmet subject to standardized impacts.

The case study of Palazzo del Capitano in Mantua (Italy) is analyzed. In particular, the attention is focused on the use of a Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) for surveying and monitoring too, considering that the building structural control has been performed in combination with other traditional topographic techniques such as geometric leveling and topographic networks for 3D control based on measurements through total stations.

In this paper we report the results of systematic application of carotid stenting performed in a cardiological setting, particularly as regards clinical management of patients and technical approach. One-hundred (100) procedures of carotid artery stenting (CAS) on 94 consecutive patients, both symptomatic and asymptomatic, with a carotid stenosis > 70%, were performed over a period of 30 months.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Even though success rates of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) are influenced by gender, women are at higher risk for adverse procedural events. Plaque dissection has been demonstrated to cause more adverse cardiac events during PTCA in the female gender than the male, but it is not clear how much it could influence stent implantation and procedural complications in the stent era. This study sought to evaluate whether the prevalence of dissection is equal in men and women with similar vessel size, which factors are associated with the risk of this complication and whether stenting has modified the immediate outcome.
