Screening for diabetic retinopathy in South Africa with 60 degrees retinal colour photography.

Objectives: Comparison of 60 degrees mydriatic retinal photography, in screening for diabetic retinopathy, with diabetes clinic doctors, formal ophthalmological assessment, and with one or two 45 degrees fields.

Design: Consecutive subjects screened by clinicians and photography, and selected eyes evaluated by an ophthalmologist. Randomized photographs assessed through one or two 45 degrees fields (by masking the slides), and at 60 degrees.

The acute effects of glucosidase inhibition on post-meal glucose increments in insulin-dependent diabetics.

The effects of glucosidase inhibition on postprandial glucose tolerance was studied in 11 insulin-dependent diabetics. In comparison with placebo, 50 mg miglitol was able to lower the incremental glucose response significantly at 30 minutes and 60 minutes when insulin was injected: (i) 30 minutes before the meal (2,3 +/- 0,5 mmol/l v. 0,37 +/- 0,2 mmol/l; P less than 0,001; and 5,0 +/- 0,7 mmol/l v.

Drug therapy for Graves' disease in blacks--very low rates of remission.

The rates of remission after a course of antithyroid drugs in 71 black and 45 white patients with Graves' disease were compared. The effect of kallikrein on spermatozoal ATP and other semen parameters.

Kallikrein promotes the release of kinins, which have been shown in in vitro studies to improve motility, viability and metabolism in human spermatozoa. The effects of kallikrein therapy on 25 males attending an infertility clinic was assessed, regarding endogenous spermatozoal ATP content, as well as other semen parameters. Thirteen of the 25 patients showed an improvement in either count, morphology, motility, viability, or a combination of these, after 3 months Kallikrein therapy.
