Optimising β-Ti21S Alloy Lattice Structures for Enhanced Femoral Implants: A Study on Mechanical and Biological Performance.

The metastable β-Ti21S alloy exhibits a lower elastic modulus than Ti-6Al-4V ELI while maintaining high mechanical strength and ductility. To address stress shielding, this study explores the integration of lattice structures within prosthetics, which is made possible through additive manufacturing. Continuous adhesion between the implant and bone is essential; therefore, auxetic bow-tie structures with a negative Poisson's ratio are proposed for regions under tensile stress, while Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) structures with a positive Poisson's ratio are recommended for areas under compressive stress.

The enzymatic hydrolysis of cell wall polysaccharides results in the production of oligosaccharides with nature of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) that are perceived by plants as danger signals. The in vitro oxidation of oligogalacturonides and cellodextrins by plant FAD-dependent oligosaccharide-oxidases (OSOXs) suppresses their elicitor activity in vivo, suggesting a protective role of OSOXs against a prolonged activation of defense responses potentially deleterious for plant health. However, OSOXs are also produced by phytopathogens and saprotrophs, complicating the understanding of their role in plant-microbe interactions.

Different Cytotoxic Effects of Cisplatin on Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Cell Lines.

This study examined the response to cisplatin in BxPC-3, Mia-Paca-2, PANC-1, and YAPC pancreatic cancer lines with different genotypic and phenotypic characteristics, and the mechanisms associated with their resistance. BxPC-3 and MIA-PaCa-2 cell lines were the most sensitive to cisplatin, while YAPC and PANC-1 were more resistant. Consistently, in cisplatin-treated BxPC-3 cells, the cleavage patterns of pro-caspase-9, -7, -3, and PARP-1 demonstrated that they were more sensitive than YAPC cells.

Arsenic(V) and vanadium(V) fractionation after its incorporation into a sandy loam soil from Pampas region, Argentina.

Arsenic is a well-known toxic substance, widely distributed, whereas vanadium is a pollutant of emerging interest. Both have been found to correlate positively in groundwaters, thus concern arises on the effect of these pollutants on crops, if such waters are used for irrigation. We conducted a study on the effect of aging with a typical crop soil mimicking soils initially irrigated with water containing As and V.

Online driver license renewal and road user injury and fatality in Washington State.

Objectives: Washington State implemented a new policy in 2004 that allowed drivers younger than 70 years old to renew their driver license by mail or online at every other renewal. Drivers aged 70 years and older were still required to renew in-person every 6 years. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether this policy change was associated with motor vehicle crash (MVC) injury and fatality among drivers, non-drivers, and all road users aged 45-69 years.
