Background: Early and accurate diagnosis of sepsis and the ensuing organ dysfunction remain a challenge in the postoperative setting. Susceptibility to infections, as well as the subsequent immunological response, are driven to some extent by the genetic predisposition of the patient. The purpose of this study was to identify novel genetic variants associated with postoperative sepsis (POS) and surgical site infections (SSIs).

Objectives/hypothesis: Vocal fold (VF) injury and chronic inflammation can progress to scarring, which is notoriously difficult to treat. Human amniotic fluid (AF) has potential for VF wound healing in a rabbit model, and we hypothesized that AF would demonstrate wound healing properties superior to hyaluronic acid (HA) over time.

Study Design: Randomized, controlled trial.

Aims: Women with previous gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have an increased risk for later development of type 2 diabetes. During pregnancy, GDM affects the cardio-metabolic protein profile; however, it is unknown how GDM affects the cardio-metabolic protein profile in the long term and if it is associated with type 2 diabetes after GDM. We hypothesise that the cardio-metabolic protein profile is affected long term and is associated with the development of type 2 diabetes after GDM.

Dementia is a health priority for Indigenous peoples. Here, we reviewed studies on the prevalence of dementia or cognitive impairment among Indigenous populations from countries with a very high Human Development Index (≥0·8). Quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute risk-of-bias tool and CONSolIDated critERia for strengthening the reporting of health research involving Indigenous peoples (CONSIDER), with oversight provided by an Indigenous Advisory Board.

The cytosolic nucleic acid sensors RIG-I and cGAS induce type-I interferon (IFN)-mediated immune responses to RNA and DNA viruses, respectively. So far no connection between the two cytosolic pathways upstream of IKK-like kinase activation has been investigated. Here, we identify heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein M (hnRNPM) as a positive regulator of IRF3 phosphorylation and type-I IFN induction downstream of both cGAS and RIG-I.
