The determinants of hepatitis C virus (HCV) viral load remain incompletely understood and may differ in females, who are relatively protected from the consequences of HCV infection during their reproductive years. We aimed to evaluate how age affects the relationship between sex and viral load. = 922 patients (males = 497, median age 62 years), all naïve to direct antiviral agents, were studied.

The Role of Bronchoalveolar Lavage in Therapeutic Antimicrobial Choices for Hematologic Patients with Pulmonary Infiltrates.

Lower respiratory tract infections are particularly frequent in hematological patients; their early diagnosis and the timely start of targeted therapy are essential. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) can provide a microbiological sample from the lower airways in a minimally invasive way. This study aimed to determine the diagnostic yield of BAL in hematological patients for microbiological purposes and its influence on modifying the therapeutic strategy.

Socio-Demographic and Clinical Characteristics of Patients with Substance Intoxication Receiving a Psychiatric Assessment in the Emergency Department of the Maggiore Della Carita Hospital, Novara, Italy.

Patients intoxicated with alcohol or other substances are often assessed and assisted in the context of the Emergency Department (ED) by emergency physicians, who usually require a psychiatric assessment. This study aims to analyse the characteristics of a sample of patients receiving a psychiatric consultation in the ED setting of the Maggiore della Carità University Hospital in Novara, Italy, in the period from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2023, to find out whether and how patients screening positive for alcohol/drugs differ from those screening negative. Socio-demographic and clinical history information and clinical data related to the ED psychiatric consultations were extracted from the PsNet database, a collection of data extracted from the application that serves as the electronic medical record for patients accessing the ED.

Impairment of the T cell memory response in chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination.

CLL patients face increased vulnerability to COVID-19 because of weakened immune systems from comorbidities and treatments. Therefore, the need for these patients of vaccination is of outermost importance. In our study we have evaluated T cell-mediated responses to COVID19 vaccines by performing the activation-induced markers (AIM) assay which allows to determine spike-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cell responses.

Lower Circulating Gas6 Levels Are Associated with Bulbar Phenotype and Faster Disease Progression in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Patients.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. While the exact cause of ALS is not fully understood, a combination of genetic and environmental factors is believed to contribute to its development. Growth arrest-specific 6 (Gas6), a vitamin K-dependent protein, has been recognized to enhance oligodendrocytes and neurons' survival and is associated with different kinds of (neuro)inflammatory conditions.
