Transcranial, Non-Invasive Evaluation of Potential Misery Perfusion During Hyperventilation Therapy of Traumatic Brain Injury Patients.

Hyperventilation (HV) therapy uses vasoconstriction to reduce intracranial pressure (ICP) by reducing cerebral blood volume. However, as HV also lowers cerebral blood flow (CBF), it may provoke misery perfusion (MP), in which the decrease in CBF is coupled with increased oxygen extraction fraction (OEF). MP may rapidly lead to the exhaustion of brain energy metabolites, making the brain vulnerable to ischemia.

The role of the World Health Organization country programs in the development of virology in Spain, 1951-1975.

Within the framework of recent historiography about the role of the World Health Organization (WHO) in modernizing public health and the multifaceted concept of global health, this study addresses the impact of the WHO's "country programs" in Spain from the time it was admitted to this organization in 1951 to 1975. This research adopts a transnational historical perspective and emphasizes attention to the circulation of health knowledge, practices, and people, and focuses on the Spain-0001 and Spain-0025programs, their role in the development of virology in Spain, and the transformation of public health. Sources include historical archives (WHO, the Spanish National Health School), various WHO publications, the contemporary medical press, and a selection of the Spanish general press.

Non-Invasive Estimation of Intracranial Pressure by Diffuse Optics: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

Intracranial pressure (ICP) is an important parameter to monitor in several neuropathologies. However, because current clinically accepted methods are invasive, its monitoring is limited to patients in critical conditions. On the other hand, there are other less critical conditions for which ICP monitoring could still be useful; therefore, there is a need to develop non-invasive methods.
