  • The COVID-19 pandemic significantly challenged healthcare systems, prompting a plastic surgery team at Humanitas Clinical and Research Hospital in Italy to implement a new protocol for immediate implant-based breast reconstruction in cancer patients undergoing mastectomy.
  • The protocol focused on minimizing COVID-19 transmission, reducing the need for advanced surgeries, facilitating quicker patient recovery, and decreasing the number of postoperative consultations.
  • A review of 51 patients treated under this protocol showed no significant differences in postoperative pain or complication rates compared to pre-COVID experiences, indicating the protocol's safety and effectiveness.
