Geospatial Access to Emergency Obstetric Surgery in Indonesia: Is Travel Time for Access Too Long?

Ensuring timely access to safe and affordable surgery within a travel time of a 2‑h drive or 30‑min walk is crucial for achieving universal health coverage, as endorsed by the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery (LCoGS). In this study, we aimed to quantify the percentage of Indonesian women of reproductive age (WRA) who can access a hospital with emergency obstetric and gynecological services within this time frame. In addition, we aimed to identify the underserved populations.

Second- and third-degree kinship analysis by NGS-based SNP genotyping and evaluation of 2045-SNP performance on limited or degraded DNA.

We developed a novel next-generation sequencing-based single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping method for second- and third-degree kinship analysis, and designed 1144- and 2045-SNP panels using one (Set A) and two sets (Sets A and B) of primers. These SNP loci were analyzed in 120 Japanese individuals, and likelihood ratios (LRs) for kinship discrimination were calculated to evaluate the effect of number of SNP loci in simulated analysis. Likelihood evaluation was performed using DNA profiles from two individuals, namely, the unknown and one reference relative.

Design of a microwave spectrometer for high-precision Lamb shift spectroscopy of antihydrogen atoms.

We have developed a microwave spectrometer for a measurement of the Lamb shift of antihydrogen atoms towards the determination of the antiproton charge radius. The spectrometer consists of two consecutive apparatuses, of which the first apparatus, (HFS), filters out hyperfine states and pre-selects the state, and the second apparatus, (MWS), sweeps the frequency around the target transition to obtain the spectrum. We optimized the geometry of the apparatuses by evaluating the S-parameter that represents the ratio of the reflected microwave signal over the input, utilizing microwave simulations based on the finite element method.

Bowl-Shaped Kekulene Analogues: Cycloarenes with two Five-Membered Rings.

Kekulene, a cycloarene composed of 12 fused benzene rings in a circular arrangement, exhibits a highly planar and robust structure. Kekulene has been the subject of investigation into its aromaticity and electronic structure, particularly in relation to the cyclic benzenoid. We have successfully synthesized novel bowl-shaped kekulene analogues with five-membered rings incorporated into the kekulene structure.
