Syphilis has re-emerged in western Europe since 2000. Changes in sexual behaviour have facilitated the spread of syphilis especially among men who have sex with men (MSM) and improved surveillance systems and case detection have lead to an increase in the reported numbers of cases. This report describes recent trends (2000-2007) of syphilis in Sweden, where the spread among MSM, particularly in the big cities, has been a major contributor to an increase in cases.

Article Synopsis
  • Since 1986, 68% of Listeria monocytogenes isolates linked to human invasive listeriosis in Sweden have been studied, focusing on 601 isolates collected from 1986 to 2007.
  • The study found that serovar 4b has decreased in prevalence since 1996, dropping to only 13% of cases by 2000-2007, while serovar 1/2a rose to 71%.
  • Analysis identified two distinct clusters of serovars: Cluster 1 includes 4b and 1/2b, while Cluster 2 consists solely of 1/2a, which is more diverse than 4b.

Analysing datasets from hunting statistics and human cases of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), we found a positive correlation between the number of human TBE cases and the number of red fox (Vulpes vulpes). Time lags were also present, indicating that high numbers of red fox in 1 y translated into high numbers of human TBE cases the following y. Results for smaller predators were mixed and inconsistent.
