Student voices on an interprofessional course.

Investigations of outcomes of interprofessional education as a component of the basic preparation of health and human service professionals have lacked a strong focus on student perceptions, the student voice. This qualitative study examined students' insights regarding the interprofessional component of an elective course offered to 23 students; five from medicine and six from each of pharmaceutical sciences, nursing and social work. Fourteen students participated in focus group interviews at the conclusion of the course and 12 participated in telephone interviews six months later.

Narratives of patients with skull base tumors and their family members: lessons for nursing practice.

The meaning of the experience of being told you or a family member have/has a serious brain tumor was revealed during a descriptive research study conducted to determine preoperative education needs. Eighteen patients and 15 family members participated immediately following the office visit with the neurosurgeon and/or on admission to hospital, for a total of 29 interviews and 13 questionnaires. Twenty-four interviews were conducted with 13 patients and 11 family members in the pre-discharge phase of the research.

Teaching about HIV/AIDS: the lessons learned.

To learn and teach about HIV/AIDS is to enter complex and sensitive territory that at times may be personally challenging. In the vast literature on HIV infection and nursing two main themes recur: nurses' lack of understanding, negative attitudes and anxieties related to HIV/AIDS and the need for education to change such attitudes and enhance nurses' knowledge and skills.

AIDS dementia complex: guidelines for nursing care.

AIDS dementia complex is one of the most common neurological problems associated with HIV-related illness. To date, the nursing care of individual with AIDS dementia complex has not been explored to any extent. As a basis for examining aspects of nursing care, the epidemiology, neuropathology, clinical presentation and diagnosis of AIDS dementia complex are reviewed and medical management considered.
