This study explores the synthesis and evaluation of novel 1,2,3-triazole-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone hybrids, focusing on their electrochemical properties and antiparasitic efficacies against two human blood-dwelling parasites Plasmodium falciparum and Schistosoma mansoni. Using copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), a well-established tool in click chemistry, two synthetic routes were assessed to develop a- and b-[triazole-methyl]-menadione derivatives. By optimizing the CuAAC reaction conditions, yields were significantly improved, reaching up to 94% for key intermediates and resulting in the formation of a library of approximately 30 compounds.

We discovered medium-ring keto bislactams as a new antischistosomal chemotype. The ketone functional group and isoindolinone substructure were required for high antischistosomal activity. Aryl substitution with EWG functional groups decreased the chemical stability.

Introduction: Enkephalins, endogenous opioid peptides, are involved in the regulation of renal function. One derived molecule, proenkephalin A, also known as penKid, has been demonstrated to be a reliable biomarker for kidney function and its plasma concentration correlates with measured glomerular filtration rate. penKid is used for prediction and diagnosis of AKI and need of renal replacement therapy (RRT).

Article Synopsis
  • - Trichosporon spp. are opportunistic pathogens causing superficial and invasive infections, with T. asahii being the most common, but T. cutaneum is notable for causing white Piedra and onychomycosis.
  • - This study investigates T. cutaneum's biofilm formation and adhesion on different surfaces (like glass and stainless steel) under varying conditions, finding that nutrient availability significantly affects biofilm efficiency.
  • - The research also shows that T. cutaneum can form structures called hyphae, which enhance its biofilm production and tolerance to fluconazole, a common antifungal treatment.

Folk medicine is widely used in Angola, even for human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) in spite of the fact that the reference treatment is available for free. Aiming to validate herbal remedies in use, we selected nine medicinal plants and assessed their antitrypanosomal activity. A total of 122 extracts were prepared using different plant parts and solvents.
