Facing up to Problem Gambling: Tracing the Emergence of Facial Recognition Technology as a means of Enforcing Voluntary Self-Exclusion.

Computer technology has long been touted as a means of increasing the effectiveness of voluntary self-exclusion schemes - especially in terms of relieving gaming venue staff of the task of manually identifying and verifying the status of new customers. This paper reports on the government-led implementation of facial recognition technology as part of an automated self-exclusion program in the city of Adelaide in South Australia-one of the first jurisdiction-wide enforcements of this controversial technology in small venue gambling. Drawing on stakeholder interviews, site visits and documentary analysis over a two year period, the paper contrasts initial claims that facial recognition offered a straightforward and benign improvement to the efficiency of the city's long-running self-excluded gambler program, with subsequent concerns that the new technology was associated with heightened inconsistencies, inefficiencies and uncertainties.

A coexistance of liver cystic echinococcosis (CE) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is very rare. HCC is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, while CE is a globally endemic zoonosis caused by the cestode tapeworm . The association between these two diseases is still not well-defined.

Response time modelling reveals evidence for multiple, distinct sources of moral decision caution.

People are often cautious in delivering moral judgements of others' behaviours, as falsely accusing others of wrongdoing can be costly for social relationships. Caution might further be present when making judgements in information-dynamic environments, as contextual updates can change our minds. This study investigated the processes with which moral valence and context expectancy drive caution in moral judgements.

Tracking dynamic adjustments to decision making and performance monitoring processes in conflict tasks.

How we exert control over our decision-making has been investigated using conflict tasks, which involve stimuli containing elements that are either congruent or incongruent. In these tasks, participants adapt their decision-making strategies following exposure to incongruent stimuli. According to conflict monitoring accounts, conflicting stimulus features are detected in medial frontal cortex, and the extent of experienced conflict scales with response time (RT) and frontal theta-band activity in the Electroencephalogram (EEG).

Novel composite scaffolds based on alginate and Mg-doped calcium phosphate fillers: Enhanced hydroxyapatite formation under biomimetic conditions.

In the present study, we synthesized hydroxyapatite (HAP) powders followed by the production of alginate based macroporous scaffolds with the aim to imitate the natural bone structure. HAP powders were synthesized by using a hydrothermal method, and after calcination, dominant phases in the powders, undoped and doped with Mg were HAP and β-tricalcium phosphate, respectively. Upon mixing with Na-alginate, followed by gelation and freeze-dying, highly macroporous composite scaffolds were obtained with open and connected pores and uniformly dispersed mineral phase as determined by scanning electron microscopy.
