Article Synopsis
  • - Galectins are proteins that bind to sugars and are involved in immune responses, cell adhesion, and inflammation, with implications for respiratory diseases like asthma, lung cancer, and infections.
  • - Galectin-3, Galectin-9, and Galectin-10 are prominently studied in asthma, influencing inflammation types, mucus production, and airway changes.
  • - Elevated levels of Galectins correlate with asthma severity and response to treatments, suggesting they could serve as useful biomarkers for monitoring disease and therapy effectiveness.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists are trying to find a reliable way to predict if someone will develop post-COVID syndrome after getting sick with COVID-19.
  • They studied 437 patients and looked at their blood to find a link between a protein called Galectin-3 and post-COVID syndrome.
  • The results showed that Galectin-3 could help predict post-COVID problems, especially when tested 60 to 120 days after the COVID infection.

Objective: To describe the long-term outcome of children with prenatally diagnosed isolated complete agenesis of the corpus callosum (cACC).

Methods: In this single-center case series, we reviewed retrospectively the charts of fetuses referred to our fetal therapy unit from January 2004 to July 2020 for a suspected anomaly of the corpus callosum (CC). Cases with prenatally diagnosed isolated cACC were included.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines right ventricular outflow tract abnormalities (RVOTA) in monochorionic/diamniotic (MC/DA) twin pregnancies that do not have twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS).
  • Among 891 MC/DA twin pregnancies analyzed from 2009 to 2018, RVOTA was found in 14 cases (1.6%), with pulmonary stenosis being the most common issue, often accompanied by other complications like amniotic fluid discrepancy and selective fetal growth restriction.
  • The findings suggest that RVOTA can indeed arise in these pregnancies, and it highlights the need for specialized fetal echocardiographic evaluations and delivery in advanced care centers for affected cases.

The aim of this study was to propose a classification in order to stratify the probability of an acute Toxoplasma infection in pregnancy and to estimate the risk of vertical transmission. We evaluated the likelihood of a primary maternal infection according to the Lebech classification and to the modified-Lebech classification proposed for our group of 375 patients referred for a suspected primary maternal infection. Fetal diagnosis included the examination of amniotic fluid by PCR to detect Toxoplasma DNA as a confirmation test.
