Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of combining high-intensity focused ultrasound with a Q-switched neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Nd:YAG) laser on treating melasma in patients over 25 years old.
  • Conducted at Mustansiriyah University from November 2020 to August 2021, participants received ultrasound treatment followed by multiple sessions of laser therapy, with significant improvements in melasma severity observed after the treatments.
  • Results indicated that the combined treatment was notably more effective than using the laser alone, showing superior results in reducing melasma in both the malar and forehead areas.

Background Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is characterized by elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, while thyroid hormones (free thyroxine (T4) and free triiodothyronine (T3)) remain within the reference ranges. Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) deficiency is common in patients with autoimmune disorders, including autoimmune hypothyroidism. The study was aimed at evaluating serum vitamin B12 levels and holotranscobalamin (HoloTC) levels in SCH patients and ascertaining their association with a risky level of TSH and the positivity of anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) antibodies.

Background: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common renal monogenic disease, characterized by bilateral accumulation of renal fluid-filled cysts leading to progressive renal volume enlargement and gradual impairment of kidney function, often resulting in end-stage renal disease. Kuwait could provide valuable genetic insights about ADPKD, including intrafamilial phenotypic variation, given its large household size. This study aims to provide a comprehensive description of the pathogenic variants linked to ADPKD in the Kuwaiti population using multiple genetic analysis modalities and to describe and analyse the ADPKD phenotypic spectrum in terms of kidney function, kidney volume and renal survival.

Background: Human Adenovirus species D (HAdV-D) was common human viral pathogen especially in eye infection, consists of several types of which HAdV-D8, -D19 and -D37 were common in eye infection. This study includes detection of HAdV-D types implicated in conjunctivitis based on L2 (Penton protein) gene similarity.

Methods: Conjunctival swabs were collected from Keratoconjunctivitis patients as eye infection related to adenovirus.
