An Exploration of Substituent Effects on the Photophysical Properties of Monobenzopentalenes.

Monobenzopentalenes have received moderate attention compared to dibenzopentalenes, yet their accessibility as stable, non-symmetric structures with diverse substituents could be interesting for materials applications, including molecular photonics. Recently, monobenzopentalene was considered computationally as a potential chromophore for singlet fission (SF) photovoltaics. To advance this compound class towards photonics applications, the excited state energetics must be characterized, computationally and experimentally.

Optically Switchable NIR Photoluminescence of PbS Semiconducting Nanocrystals using Diarylethene Photoswitches.

Precisely modulated photoluminescence (PL) with external control is highly demanded in material and biological sciences. However, it is challenging to switch the PL and in the NIR region with a high modulation contrast. Here, we demonstrate that reversible and switching of the PL in the NIR region can be achieved in a bicomponent system comprised of PbS semiconducting nanocrystals (NCs) and diarylethene (DAE) photoswitches.

Vision-Based Tracking of Surgical Motion During Live Open-Heart Surgery.

Background: Motion tracking during live surgeries may be used to assess surgeons' intra-operative performance, provide feedback, and predict outcome. Current assessment protocols rely on human observations, controlled laboratory settings, or tracking technologies not suitable for live operating theatres. In this study, a novel method for motion tracking of live open-heart surgery was developed, and evaluated.

'Too many mice make no lining for their nest' - Reasons and effects of parallel governmental structures for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in Southern Africa.

Many African countries face escalating challenges of increasing disaster risk and anticipated impacts of climate change. Although disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA) are tightly linked and comprising virtually identical practices in vulnerable countries in Southern Africa, research has identified parallel governance structures across the region. This study applied comparative case study research, based on 27 semi-structured interviews, to investigate the reasons for and effects of such parallel structures for DRR and CCA in Botswana, Mozambique, the Seychelles, Tanzania and Zambia.
