Oral human papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with oropharyngeal cancer (OPC). Although OPC incidence is increasing globally, knowledge of oral HPV infection rates is limited. Here we carried out an observational epidemiological analysis of oral HPV incidence in 3,137 men enrolled from the United States, Mexico and Brazil between 2005 and 2009.

Article Synopsis
  • Breast cancer patients experience a heightened risk of cardiometabolic diseases, exacerbated by adjuvant therapies that alter inflammatory and metabolic health markers.
  • A study measured inflammatory cytokines and metabolic health parameters in 51 postmenopausal early breast cancer patients over two years, revealing significant increases in cytokines immediately after chemotherapy.
  • Although cytokine levels returned to near baseline within six months, patients continued to show worsened lipid profiles and insulin resistance for up to a year post-treatment.

High-resolution respirometry (HRR) can assess peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) bioenergetics, but no standardized medium for PBMC preparation and HRR analysis exist. Here, we study the effect of four different media (MiR05, PBS, RPMI, Plasmax) on the count, size, and HRR (Oxygraph-O2k) of intact PBMCs. Remarkably, the cell count was 21 % higher when PBMCs were resuspended in MiR05 than in PBS or Plasmax, causing O flux underestimation during HRR due to inherent adjustments.

Background: The role of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) neutralizing antibody response from natural infection and vaccination, and the potential determinants of this response are poorly understood. Characterizing this antibody response and the factors associated with neutralization can help inform future prevention efforts and improve clinical outcomes in those infected.

Objectives: The goals of this study were to prospectively evaluate SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels and the neutralizing antibody responses among naturally infected adults and to determine demographic and behavioral factors independently associated with these responses.

Background: Adjuvant chemo- and radiotherapy cause cellular damage to tumorous and healthy dividing cells. Chemotherapy has been shown to cause mitochondrial respiratory dysfunction in non-tumorous tissues, but the effects on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) remain unknown.

Aim: We aimed to investigate mitochondrial respiration of PBMCs before and after adjuvant chemo- and radiotherapy in postmenopausal patients with early breast cancer (EBC) and relate these to metabolic parameters of the patients.
