Circulating fibrocyte percentage and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio are accurate biomarkers of uncomplicated and complicated appendicitis: a prospective cohort study.

Background: There is increasing evidence that uncomplicated appendicitis (UA) may be treated nonoperatively in cases of UA. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the diagnostic accuracy of circulating fibrocyte percentage (CFP), white blood cell count, C-reactive protein, and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in diagnosing uncomplicated and complicated appendicitis.

Materials And Methods: Eighty consecutive adult patients presenting with suspected appendicitis were recruited in a cohort-based prospective study between June 2015 and February 2016 at University Hospital Limerick in Ireland.

Role of circulating fibrocytes in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis.

Background: Improved diagnostic biomarkers are required for acute appendicitis. The circulating fibrocyte percentage (CFP) is increased in inflammatory states, but has not been studied in acute appendicitis. This study aimed to determine CFP in acute appendicitis and compare diagnostic accuracy with standard serological biomarkers.

Abdominal compartment syndrome secondary to megarectum and megasigmoid.

A 31-year-old male patient with chronic constipation of unknown aetiology presented emergently with worsening nausea, vomiting and abdominal distension of one week duration. On examination, his abdomen was distended with minimal tenderness. A plain film of the abdomen demonstrated severe faecal loading.

Incidental small cell carcinoma of the gallbladder-an unexpected finding at elective cholecystectomy.

A 69-year-old woman was admitted electively for a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Pre-operatively she had an ultrasound abdomen which demonstrated a large gallbladder (GB) stone. Intraoperatively, a nodule was noted on the liver supero-lateral to GB.

Initial experience with a dual-console robotic-assisted platform for training in colorectal surgery.

Background: Minimally invasive surgery is associated with several patient-related benefits, including reduced length of hospital stay and reduced blood loss. Robotic-assisted surgery offers many advantages when compared with standard laparoscopic procedures, including a stable three-dimensional binocular camera platform, motion smoothing and motion scaling, improved dexterity and ergonomics. There are limited data on the effectiveness of the dual-console DaVinci Xi platform for teaching resident surgeons.
