Racial and ethnic disparities in common inpatient safety outcomes in a children's hospital cohort.

Background: Emerging evidence has shown racial and ethnic disparities in rates of harm for hospitalised children. Previous work has also demonstrated how highly heterogeneous approaches to collection of race and ethnicity data pose challenges to population-level analyses. This work aims to both create an approach to aggregating safety data from multiple hospitals by race and ethnicity and apply the approach to the examination of potential disparities in high-frequency harm conditions.

P-wave duration in a clinically normal hound population.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis is a common noninvasive technique used for diagnosis of cardiac disease in the clinical and research branches of veterinary medicine. Accurate analysis of P-wave duration, amplitude, and morphology is crucial to identification of morphologic and functional changes of the atria. The published accepted maximal normal value for P-wave duration in the dog is < or = 40 milliseconds.

Gastroduodenal ulceration associated with flunixin meglumine administration in three dogs .

In 3 clinically ill dogs, signs of gastroduodenal ulceration were first noticed within 7 days of beginning flunixin meglumine administration and included pyrexia, anorexia, weight loss, vomiting, melena, pain on abdominal palpation, and abdominal distention. One dog was euthanatized and 2 dogs recovered after surgical repair of the perforated ulcers and treatment of peritonitis. Prolonged administration of flunixin meglumine should be avoided, especially in debilitated dogs or when concurrently administering other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or corticosteroids.
