Wildlife diseases are a major threat for species conservation, and there is a growing need to implement more comprehensive disease response programs to better identify these diseases of concern. During March 2017, we observed moribund and dead eastern newts, Notophthalmus viridescens, in a single pond in middle Tennessee. All moribund individuals were emaciated.

Purpose: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is related to advancing age and the presence of androgens and occurs in virtually all older men. BPH causes morbidity, most often by urinary obstruction, in a substantial fraction of men over sixty. Both finasteride and androgen ablation induce partial diminution in BPH that occurs over weeks to months.

Extracellular pH may affect the sensitivity of cancer cells to chemotherapy agents. In an attempt to maximize the conditions for chemotherapy treatment of transitional cell carcinoma we tested the effect of pH on sensitivity of MGH-U3 transitional cell carcinoma cell line to thiotepa, doxorubicin, and mitomycin c in vitro. The toxicity of each agent tested varied with pH.

In summary, renal AVMs are rare. The possibility of these lesions should be raised in cases of hematuria of unknown etiology, prolonged hematuria following trauma or needle biopsy, unexplained congestive heart failure or abdominal/flank bruit, or hypertension after renal trauma. Selective renal arteriography is the study of choice for establishing the diagnosis, the hallmark being demonstration of an abnormal arterial communication with a vein.

Early ureteral reconstruction was performed during the immediate postoperative period upon 12 patients who sustained ureteral injuries secondary to gynecologic surgical procedures. The injuries occurred postoperatively for benign disease: endometriosis in one patient, fibrosis in eight patients and tubo-ovarian abscess in one patient. In three instances, portions of the ureter were noted in the pathologic specimen.
