Veno-venous ECMO intervention for respiratory failure after trauma from a motor vehicle collision.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has emerged as a salvage therapy in refractory respiratory failure. Within the literature, there is evidence to support the use of ECMO in severe thoracic trauma; however, there is minimal information on its applicability in mild to moderate thoracic trauma. This report describes a man in his 50s who suffered thoracic trauma following a motor vehicle accident, who, despite maximal medical therapy, experienced deterioration in respiratory function, requiring the commencement of veno-venous ECMO on day 5 post injury and subsequently achieved excellent functional recovery.

Fixational eye movements and edge integration in lightness perception.

A neural theory of human lightness computation is described and computer-simulated. The theory proposes that lightness is derived from transient ON and OFF cell responses in the early visual pathways that have different characteristic neural gains and that are generated by fixational eye movements (FEMs) as the eyes transit luminance edges in the image. The ON and OFF responses are combined with corollary discharge signals that encode the eye movement direction to create directionally selective ON and OFF responses.

Validation and accuracy of the Hyfe cough monitoring system: a multicenter clinical study.

Background: The ability to passively and continuously monitor coughing for prolonged periods of time would significantly improve cough management and research. To date there is no automated clinically validated cough monitor that can be routinely used in clinical care and research. Here we describe the validation of such an automated cough monitor.

Structural Variation Interpretation in the Genome Sequencing Era: Lessons from Cytogenetics.

Background: Structural variation (SV), defined as balanced and unbalanced chromosomal rearrangements >1 kb, is a major contributor to germline and neoplastic disease. Large variants have historically been evaluated by chromosome analysis and now are commonly recognized by chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA). The increasing application of genome sequencing (GS) in the clinic and the relatively high incidence of chromosomal abnormalities in sick newborns and children highlights the need for accurate SV interpretation and reporting.
