AMPA receptor downregulation induced by ischaemia/reperfusion is attenuated by age and blocked by meloxicam.

Aim: Stroke prevalence increases with age, while alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionic acid receptor (AMPAR) and inflammation have been related to ischaemia-induced damage. This study shows how age and treatment with an anti-inflammatory agent (meloxicam) modify the levels of AMPAR subunits GluR1 and GluR2, as well as the mRNA levels of the GluR2-editing enzyme, ADAR2, in a global brain ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) model.

Methods: Two days after global ischaemia CA1, CA3, dentate gyrus and cerebral cortex were obtained from sham-operated and I/R-injured 3- and 18-month-old Sprague-Dawley rats.

M-mode echocardiographic changes in growing beagles.

Heart growth in 6 female beagle dogs was measured by using M-mode echocardiography at 4, 7, 10, 13, 17, and 21 mo of age. The same 6 dogs were evaluated throughout the study to establish when cardiac development ends in this breed. The following parameters were measured during systole and diastole: left ventricle posterior wall thickness, interventricular septal thickness, left ventricular internal dimension, left atrial dimension during ventricular systole, aortic root dimension at end diastole, E-point to septal separation, left ventricular preejection period, ejection time of the left ventricular outflow, and time between the cessation and onset of the mitral inflow intervals.

Renal handling of calcium and phosphorus in experimental renal hyperparathyroidism in dogs.

Twenty-four hour urinary excretion, fractional excretion and the filtered load of calcium and phosphorus were monitored as hyperparathyroidism evolved in a model of progressive canine renal failure. Thirteen beagles of both sexes aged four and a half months were used. Nine of them were subjected to a renal damaging schedule (neomycine, 60 mg/kg/48 h, IM, 32 weeks) in order to induce chronic renal failure leading to secondary hyperparathyroidism (2HPT group).

A simple procedure to perform intravenous injections in the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus).

We describe a simple and feasible procedure for performing intravenous administration of substances in the gerbil. Under light anaesthesia, animals were held in dorsal recumbency and a very small incision of skin, parallel to the femoral vein on the internal side of the thigh, was made. The vein is easily accessible via thin skin incision.

Age- and gender-related changes in copper and zinc levels in the plasma of Mongolian gerbils.

Zinc and copper are components of many enzymes. Little information exists on the levels of trace elements in the plasma of the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus). We studied the age- and gender-related differences in the plasma Zn and Cu levels of healthy Mongolian gerbils.
