Pertussis is an acute respiratory illness caused by , showing a re-emergence in developed countries. However, it is probably under-recognised and, as a consequence, its burden is underestimated. Here, we report the clinical case of an infant diagnosed with pertussis, despite a regular schedule of vaccination, thanks to a careful clinical evaluation, including personal and family history.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA male newborn developed a post-natal cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, arising in the clinical setting of congenital thrombocytopenia, which was diagnosed as being alloimmune. The evidence of active CMV infection in an infant showing slow-resolution lower airways infection, persistent neonatal and low platelet volume thrombocytopenia, and diffuse eczema (associated to very high levels of serum immunoglobulin E) led to the diagnosis of Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) before the third month of life, despite the presence of several confounding clinical factors. The correct interpretation of all clinical features supported the precocious diagnosis of WAS.

Here, we describe a child returning from Philippines and diagnosed with Dengue Fever, through the information provided by parents about an ongoing outbreak in their municipality. An appropriate clinical management in the hospital was established to monitor the occurrence of complications and to cancel the risk of dengue virus transmission in the acute phase of infection.

Maximum parsimony and Bayesian methods were remarkably congruent in topologies observed and in nodal support measures. We recovered all of the higher level carnivoran clades that had been robustly supported in previous analyses (by analyses of morphological and molecular data), including the monophyly of Caniformia, Feliformia, Arctoidea, Pinnipedia, Musteloidea, Procyonidae + Mustelidae sensu stricto, and a clade of (Hyaenidae + (Herpestidae + Malagasy carnivorans)).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTempo and mode of nucleotide change were examined in an orthologous carnivoran nuclear repetitive DNA element (Can SINE), and compared with those of the transthyretin intron I (TR-i-I) sequence in which it is embedded, by using a phylogenetic framework. The Can SINE is found in representatives of all living caniform carnivoran families, but no living feliform families. This suggests insertion 40-65 MYA, after the two lineages split, but before the caniform radiation.
