Article Synopsis
  • Standing enhances cognitive performance in healthy individuals but has a different effect on patients with Parkinson's disease (PwPD), as they may require more effort to maintain balance.
  • A study involving 40 participants (20 PwPD and 20 healthy subjects) showed that while healthy individuals performed better in a counting task when standing, PwPD only showed improvement in efficiency with their eyes open.
  • The findings indicate that PwPD may struggle more with cognitive tasks in standing posture due to balance issues, particularly when visual cues are absent, which is important for understanding their risk of falls.

Background: Disorder of consciousness (DOC) is a state of prolonged altered consciousness due to severe acquired brain injury (ABI). DOC can be differentiated into coma, unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS), or minimally conscious state (MCS) depending on the behavioral features observed and their relationship to the level of consciousness. Spasticity is one of the most frequently reported medical comorbidities in DOC patients.

(1) Background: Ankle fracture results in pain, swelling, stiffness and strength reduction, leading to an altered biomechanical behavior of the joint during the gait cycle. Nevertheless, a common pattern of kinematic alterations has still not been defined. To this end, we analyzed the literature on instrumental gait assessment after ankle fracture, and its correlation with evaluator-based and patient-reported outcome measures.

Background: Acidic beverages, such as soft drinks (orange juice and cola), can produce erosion of resin composites. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of immersion in acidic drink on the Vickers microhardness (VK) of different esthetic restorative materials (one nanohybrid Ormocer-based composite, one nanoceramic composite, one nanofilled composite, and one microfilled hybrid composite).

Materials And Methods: In this study, thirty specimens of each esthetic restorative material were divided into three subgroups ( = 10): specimens of group 1 were used as control, specimens of group 2 were immersed in 50 ml of acidic drink for 1 day, specimens of group 3 were immersed in 50 ml of acidic drink for 7 days.
