Beyond air quality--factors that affect prevalence estimates of sick building syndrome.

If the prevalence of sick building syndrome (SBS) is estimated before intervention begins, then a reduction in the estimate may later be used to measure success of the intervention, and in particular, those efforts toward improving air quality. However, the measure of success will be distorted if factors other than air quality affect the SBS prevalence estimate. In this study the background prevalence of SBS was estimated and study factors identified that alone affected the estimate.

Industrial hygiene and national health objectives for the year 2000.

Industrial hygiene can have a powerful effect on family, community, and environmental health in addition to its effect on occupational health. Contemporary industrial hygiene begins in the workplace, but its impact can spread and improve the health status of the nation in several ways. Thirteen objectives for industrial hygiene are presented in this report.

Permeation of chlorinated aromatic compounds through Viton and nitrile glove materials.

The ASTM cell was utilized to study permeation of chloro-, o-dichloro-, and m-dichloro-benzenes and o- and p-chlorotoluenes through Viton (unsupported) and nitrile (supported and unsupported) glove materials using isopropanol as collecting solvent, and FID/gas chromatography for quantitation. Adequate mixing in the collection chamber was accomplished by externally agitating the ASTM cell at the required speed in a moving-tray water bath at 25 degrees C. The Viton glove did not show permeation even after 4 hours.
