During surgical repair of congenital heart defects, surgeons often come across anomalies that might not have been adequately illustrated in preoperative imaging. In this case image, we describe the absence of pericardium which was discovered during surgical repair of a sinus venosus defect in a small child.

Del Nido versus conventional blood cardioplegia in tetralogy of fallot repair: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Objectives: Compare outcomes of Del Nido (DN) versus conventional blood cardioplegia (BC) in the surgical repair of Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF).

Methods: Medical databases were searched to identify relevant clinical trials. Meta-analysis was conducted for primary (cardiopulmonary bypass [CPB] and aortic cross-clamp [ACC] times, hospital and intensive care unit [ICU] length of stay [LOS], mechanical ventilation time) and secondary (adverse events, lactate levels, volume of additional cardioplegia) endpoints.

Small cardiac vein draining into the inferior vena cava.

Cardiac venous anomalies are rare congenital anatomical anomalies, which are most commonly found on computed tomography scans as an accidental finding. We report a case of a 14-year-old child who was operated for an atrial septal defect, and during the operation, we came across an anomalous drainage of the small cardiac vein into the inferior vena cava. The child's postoperative course was uneventful.

Desaturation after Fontan procedure due to systemic venous collateral and improvement after closure with embolization.

Key Clinical Message: Systemic to pulmonary venous collaterals (SPVCs) are common findings in patients with Fontan and may be responsible for desaturation in this group of patients. In selected cases, percutaneous closure of SPVCs with coils or vascular plugs could be offered as a safe and effective treatment modality for these patients.
