Role of asymptomatic bacteriuria on early periprosthetic joint infection after hip hemiarthroplasty. BARIFER randomized clinical trial.

Purpose: To evaluate preoperative asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) treatment to reduce early-periprosthetic joint infections (early-PJIs) after hip hemiarthroplasty (HHA) for fracture.

Methods: Open-label, multicenter RCT comparing fosfomycin-trometamol versus no intervention with a parallel follow-up cohort without ASB.

Primary Outcome: early-PJI after HHA.

Beyond the antibiogram, little attention has been paid to the influence of deep microbiological characteristics on patient prognosis. Our aim was to investigate whether microbiological genotypic and phenotypic features have a significant influence on infection pathogenesis and patient outcome.

Introduction: Primary meningococcal septic arthritis (PMSA) is an unusual manifestation of meningococcal disease. It is defined as the presence of acute septic arthritis without association with meningitis or the classic meningococcemia and isolation of Neisseria meningitidis in synovial fluid and blood culture. Patients And Methods: Observational, descriptive, retrospective study of a population of inpatients with UTI diagnosis (October-December, 2007). Recorded variables included personal data, risk factors for complicated UTI, diagnosis criteria, microbiological results and antibiotics used.
