Herein, a novel approach to the controlled formation of chitosan-Ag nanocomposites (NCs) with different structures and tunable chemical/biological properties was proposed. The chitosan-Ag NCs were obtained using hydrothermal synthesis and varying the concentrations of components. The hypothesis of chitosan-Ag NC synthesis using polysaccharide coils as a "microreactor" system was confirmed.

Objective: To highlight the importance of early recognition of hypopigmented mycosis fungoides (HMF) in cases of cutaneous hypochromia in children, with a view to an effective diagnostic and therapeutic approach.
Case Description: Two cases of HMF in children are reported. The first case involves an eight-year-old boy with hypochromic macules on the trunk and root of the upper and lower limbs, while the second case is a six-year-old boy with widespread hypochromic patches.

Yellow fever (YF) is a viral disease that affects both humans and non-human primates (NHPs). Neotropical monkeys are more severely stricken by YF and the impact of the disease can be devastating to the endangered golden-headed lion tamarins (GHLTs, Leontopithecus chrysomelas). Susceptible GHLTs were immunized with the commercial Brazilian YF 17DD live attenuated vaccine or two other experimental non-replicating YF vaccines: a purified whole-virus, b-propiolactone-inactivated vaccine and a plant-derived recombinant subunit vaccine.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe present work analyzes the behavior of an activated carbon fabricated from almond shells for the removal of cationic dyes (methylene blue, MB, and malachite green, MG) by adsorption from aqueous solutions. The carbonized precursor was activated with KOH at a 1:2 (/) ratio with the objective of increasing both the surface area and the pore volume. Both non-activated and activated carbon were characterized in different aspects of interest in dye adsorption studies (surface structure, point of zero charge, specific surface area, and pore size distribution).
