Introduction: A key factor in influenza pandemic preparedness is the ability to detect zoonotic influenza virus strains as they emerge in humans through spillover events, ideally before human-to-human transmission occurs.

Design: In this study, the utility of the QIAstat-Dx syndromic device for influenza surveillance was evaluated. Bioinformatic analysis was performed on all WHO-recommended influenza Candidate Vaccine Viruses (CVVs), including the common strains recommended for the 2023-2024 influenza vaccine composition in the northern hemisphere, and 16 different H5 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) and two H9N2 low pathogenic avian influenza virus (LPAIV) strains.

Background: The physiopathology of life-threatening cerebrovascular complications in preeclampsia is unknown. We investigated whether disruption of the blood-brain barrier, generated using circulating small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) from women with preeclampsia or placentae cultured under hypoxic conditions, impairs the expression of tight junction proteins, such as CLDN5 (claudin-5), mediated by VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), and activation of KDR (VEGFR2 [VEGF receptor 2]).

Methods: We perform a preclinical mechanistic study using sEVs isolated from plasma of pregnant women with normal pregnancy (sEVs-NP; n=9), sEVs isolated from plasma of women with preeclampsia (sEVs-PE; n=9), or sEVs isolated from placentas cultured in normoxia (sEVs-Nor; n=10) or sEVs isolated from placentas cultured in hypoxia (sEVs-Hyp; n=10).

The study of spatial skills is gaining importance due to their relevance in everyday activities and their critical role in developing competencies across various academic disciplines. The main goal of this study was to explore whether mental rotation strategies, such as the so-called holistic -rotating an entire object- and piecemeal -rotating individual parts of the object- approaches, can be induced, and whether sex differences emerge during the process of strategy induction. This objective holds a pivotal role as it could lead to the enhancement of mental rotation abilities and the development of effective interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • * Vaccinated cattle in Mbarara showed a 20% reduction in tick numbers, and there was a negative correlation between antibody levels and tick counts.
  • * Additionally, a 40% decrease in CCHFV-seropositive cattle was observed in those vaccinated, suggesting that annual booster doses can effectively maintain protective antibody levels against tick-related diseases.
