Article Synopsis
  • Bladder cancer (BC) is complex and diverse, posing challenges in predicting outcomes and choosing effective treatments, with molecular subtyping being a promising approach but facing practical limitations due to costs and complexity.
  • Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is discussed as a potential simpler alternative to molecular methods for classifying BC, focusing on cytokeratin expression patterns to identify subtypes like basal and luminal types, especially in less studied non-muscle-invasive cases.
  • The review emphasizes the need for standardized IHC markers and protocols to ensure broader application in clinical settings, while recognizing ongoing challenges and the need for more research to improve diagnostic processes and patient outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Early breast cancer patients often relapse due to leftover cancer cells after treatment, and traditional methods struggle to detect them in low concentrations.
  • A study collected 282 high-volume blood samples to improve the detection of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and circulating tumor cells (CTCs) using a specialized PCR assay, successfully finding ctDNA and/or CTCs in all pre-treatment samples.
  • The method showed promise for predicting residual disease accurately and detecting relapses months in advance, making it a potentially effective tool for monitoring early breast cancer patients post-treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • - Epithelial basement membrane corneal dystrophy is a rare condition that causes recurrent corneal erosions due to problems with the connection between the corneal epithelium and the basement membrane.
  • - Historically, most studies have focused on the eye-related symptoms, while there has been less attention on the underlying pathology of the condition.
  • - This text intends to provide a detailed description of the microscopy involved and to discuss both clinical and treatment aspects related to a specific case.

These guidelines from the uropathology working group of the Spanish Society of Pathology (SEAP) are based on the European and ISUP 2015 recommendations and those of the College of American Pathologists, as well as the latest WHO 2016, TNM (AJCC) 2017 classifications. They include recommendations for specimen sampling, macro- and microscopic examination and immunohistochemistry. Gleason patterns are specified: Gleason pattern 3 includes hyperplastic, atrophic and microcystic glands, while pattern 4 includes all cribriform or glomeruloid glands.
