Therapeutic techniques and session impact: A practice-research network study in private practice.

This study investigated the relationship between therapeutic techniques and session impact, by examining the replicability of findings observed in a university-based training clinic (Boswell et al., 2010) in another practice-oriented setting: private practice.  = 8 therapists completed session-level assessments of their technique use for  = 38 clients.

Noncoding RNPs of viral origin.

Like their host cells, many viruses produce noncoding (nc)RNAs. These show diversity with respect to time of expression during viral infection, length and structure, protein-binding partners and relative abundance compared with their host-cell counterparts. Viruses, with their limited genomic capacity, presumably evolve or acquire ncRNAs only if they selectively enhance the viral life cycle or assist the virus in combating the host's response to infection.

Deaf education in China: history, current issues, and emerging deaf voices.

An overview is provided of (a) deaf education in China, (b) views of deaf Chinese, and (c) recent empowering international collaborations. China's national policy focuses on oral/aural education and hearing rehabilitation. However, everyday practice in schools for deaf children includes various forms of Chinese Sign Language.

Retinamide-induced apoptosis in glioblastomas is associated with down-regulation of Bcl-xL and Bcl-2 proteins.

Glioblastomas are among the most difficult neoplasms to treat with continued poor prognosis for long-term survival. Glioblastomas have developed effective mechanisms to resist chemotherapy including levels anti-apoptotic proteins, Bcl-xL and Bcl-2. Chemotherapy agents that promote down-regulation of Bcl-xL and Bcl-2 may enhance sensitivity to chemotherapy in glioblastomas.

BCNU down-regulates anti-apoptotic proteins bcl-xL and Bcl-2 in association with cell death in oligodendroglioma-derived cells.

Oligodendroglial differentiation in gliomas is associated with enhanced sensitivity to chemotherapy. Antiapoptotic proteins, Bcl-xL and Bcl-2, are over-expressed in early passage cell lines derived from glioblastomas. Down-regulation of Bcl-xL and Bcl-2 with DNA antisense oligonucleotides promotes cell death in glioblastoma cells.

Lovastatin-induced up-regulation of the BH3-only protein, Bim, and cell death in glioblastoma cells.

The mechanism of lovastatin-induced cell death was examined in three established human glioblastoma cell lines; U87, U251, and U138. Changes in potential modifiers of apoptosis, including Bcl-2 family proteins and MAP kinase targets after such lovastatin treatment, were evaluated. Lovastatin (5 microm) treatment causes extensive cell death in two of the cell lines, U87 and U251; but only minimal in a third, U138.

Clinical utility of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in morphologically ambiguous gliomas with hybrid oligodendroglial/astrocytic features.

Gliomas with hybrid oligodendroglial/astrocytic features are diagnostically problematic, and our ability to predict tumor behavior is limited. Some likely represent intermingled mixed oligoastrocytomas (MOAs), though precise diagnostic criteria and specific markers for this lesion are lacking. From the files at Washington University (1987-2000), 155 "ambiguous" glioma/intermingled MOA candidates were independently classified and graded by 5 neuropathologists, with consensus-derived pure oligodendrogliomas and astrocytomas excluded from further study.

Human mineralized bone in extraction sites before implant placement: preliminary results.

Background: Bone loss after tooth extraction may prevent dental implant placement. Human mineralized bone grafts can be used to restore bone volume and allow for tooth replacement with dental implants.

Methods: The authors grafted 22 sites in 18 patients with human mineralized bone after tooth extraction.

Intrathecal baclofen withdrawal: a case report and review of the literature.

Introduction: Spasticity is an endpoint of a variety of neurologic disorders with upper motor neuron damage. There have been several studies demonstrating improvement in spasticity through administration of intrathecal baclofen. Withdrawal from oral baclofen has been well described.

Efficacy of Eye Movement Desensitization in the treatment of cognitive intrusions related to a past stressful event.

Much of the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) efficacy research has been widely criticized, limiting scientific understanding of its therapeutic components. The present investigation of Eye Movement Desensitization (EMD) effectiveness included undergraduate students reporting current intrusive cognitions conceming a traumatic event. The Consultation Process: Adapted Physical Education Specialists' Perceptions.

The purpose was to examine adapted physical education (APE) specialists' perceptions about consultation as a delivery model for individuals with disabilities. Six APE specialists (4 female, 2 male) from California participated in this phenomenological study. Data came from in-depth individual interviews, field observations, researcher notes, and focus group interactions.

A component analysis of cognitive-behavioral therapy for generalized anxiety disorder and the role of interpersonal problems.

Clients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) received either (a) applied relaxation and self-control desensitization, (b) cognitive therapy, or (c) a combination of these methods. Treatment resulted in significant improvement in anxiety and depression that was maintained for 2 years. The large majority no longer met diagnostic criteria; a minority sought further treatment during follow-up.

Aggressive phenotypic and genotypic features in pediatric and NF2-associated meningiomas: a clinicopathologic study of 53 cases.

Pediatric and NF2-associated meningiomas are uncommon and poorly characterized in comparison to sporadic adult cases. In order to elucidate their molecular features, we analyzed MIB-1, progesterone receptor (PR), NF2, merlin, DAL-1, DAL-1 protein, and chromosomal arms 1p and 14q in 53 meningiomas from 40 pediatric/NF2 patients using immunohistochemistry and dual-color fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Fourteen pediatric (42%) patients, including 5 previously undiagnosed patients, had NF2.

The effect of state legislation on eye donation.

Purpose: Pennsylvania Act 102 implemented in March 1995 required all acute care hospitals in Pennsylvania to routinely refer all deaths to the Organ Procurement Organization for determination of suitability for organ/tissue donation. This study analyzed the effect of the law on eye donation.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of the total number of referrals and the actual number of eye donations from 62 hospitals in Pennsylvania to the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley was performed for the years 1993 to 1998.

Human immunodeficiency virus p24 antigen testing in cornea donors.

Purpose: Testing for the p24 antigen of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may detect early HIV infection in the seronegative window; however, falsely reactive results may occur in cadaver specimens. Although neither the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) nor the Eye Bank Association of America requires p24 testing of cornea donors, many tissue banks using other organs from cornea donors do perform this assay, and the FDA requires that eye banks reject corneal tissue if a reactive p24 assay is reported. We investigated the impact of p24 testing on eye banking and corneal transplantation.

Deaf teacher candidates in hearing classrooms: a unique teacher preparation program.

An undergraduate teacher education program at Gallaudet University prepares deaf students in "regular" education. This includes a required full-time internship with hearing students (assisted by sign language interpreters). Graduates then continue in a master's degree program in deaf education, thus acquiring dual certification.

Reforming deaf education. A paradigm shift from how to teach to what to teach.

The 1980s and 1990s have witnessed increased public attention to the quality of the education provided to America's students. Much of this attention has focused on the quality of the school curriculum and the teacher's knowledge and ability to teach this curriculum. This article reviews curriculum reform in regular education and the need for this field, the education of students who are deaf and hard of hearing, to address similar concerns.

Evaluating health care quality: the moderating role of outcomes.

An integrative model of health care quality is presented. "Health care quality" is defined as provider conformance to patient requirements at three benefit levels: core, intangible, and tangible. The model is operationalized and tested in a clinical setting, a large center for fertility studies with more than 5000 patients.

Malignant glaucoma induced by an intraocular lens.

A case of malignant (ciliary block) glaucoma apparently induced by a large posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC-IOL) is presented. The involved eye was small, with an axial length of 21.7 mm and a preoperative refractive error of +8.

Laser suture lysis after trabeculectomy.

In an effort to achieve the early postoperative safety and stability provided by trabeculectomy plus the late lower intraocular pressure (IOP) advantages of full-thickness glaucoma filtration surgery, 43 eyes of 38 patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma had laser suture lysis after primary trabeculectomy. The technique of laser suture lysis afforded serial release of resistance to aqueous outflow through the newly performed trabeculectomy, allowing initial tight closure of the trabeculectomy to avoid the dangers of hypotony. Serial gradual loosening of the trabeculectomy closure decreased resistance to outflow through the trabeculectomy and thereby lowered the IOP to desired levels in a controlled, titrated manner.
