Article Synopsis
  • Fluids in the body shift towards the head during spaceflight, causing internal jugular vein (IJV) swelling and changes in blood flow that may raise thrombosis risk.
  • The study examined how brief weightlessness (0-G) impacts IJV size and blood flow, using ultrasound on 13 participants in different positions on Earth and during spaceflight.
  • Findings showed that while both IJVs enlarge in 0-G, stagnant blood flow was observed in one participant's left IJV, suggesting potential negative effects on venous flow dynamics and increased thromboembolism risk for astronauts during space travel.

Red meat is stigmatized as an unhealthy protein choice; however, its impacts on vascular function have not been evaluated. We aimed to measure the vascular impact of adding either low-fat (~5% fat) ground beef (LFB) or high-fat (~25% fat) ground beef (HFB) to a habitual diet in free-living men. Twenty-three males (39.

We hypothesized that consumption of high-fat (HF) ground beef (24% fat) would not affect plasma concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) or low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C), whereas low-fat (LF) ground beef (5% fat) would decrease HDL-C and LDL-C concentrations. In a randomized 2-period crossover, controlled feeding trial, 25 men (mean age and body mass index, 40 years and 31.2) consumed 115-g HF or LF patties, 5/week for 5 weeks with a 4-week washout.

Background: The Unified Dyskinesia Rating Scale (UDysRS) evaluates dyskinesia in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). A minimal clinically important change (MCIC)-the smallest change in a treatment outcome that a patient considers important-remains undefined for the UDysRS.

Objective: To utilize pivotal amantadine delayed-release/extended-release (DR/ER) trial data to derive MCICs for the UDysRS total score in patients with PD experiencing dyskinesia.

Maintaining consistent levodopa benefits while simultaneously controlling dyskinesia can be difficult. Recently, an amantadine delayed release/extended release (DR/ER) formulation (Gocovri) indicated for dyskinesia received additional FDA approval as an adjunct to levodopa for the treatment of OFF episodes. We evaluated OFF time reductions with amantadine-DR/ER in a pooled analysis of two phase III amantadine-DR/ER trials (NCT02136914, NCT02274766) followed by a 2-year open-label extension trial (NCT02202551).

Background: Foot and ankle injuries comprise a significant proportion of all injuries sustained by National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletes. In particular, sports that combine jumping and rapid changes in direction are associated with increased lower extremity injuries.

Purpose: To describe the epidemiology of foot and ankle injuries in men's and women's jumping sports, including NCAA men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, and women's gymnastics, during the 2009-2010 through 2013-2014 seasons.

Parietal cortex activity contributes to higher-level cognitive processes, including endogenous visual attention and saccade planning. While visual attention is the process of selecting pertinent information from the environment, saccade planning may involve motor attention in the planning of a specific movement, including the process of selecting the correct path. We isolated areas in parietal cortex involved in saccade planning, while controlling visual attention, to understand the relationship between the two processes.

J Strength Cond Res 34(4): 901-904, 2020-The purpose of this study was to determine whether an athletic strength and conditioning (S&C) session will alter body composition estimates of a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan.

Unlabelled: The energy expenditure of resistance exercise (RE) is an important consideration for exercise prescription and weight management, yet prediction models are lacking.

Purpose: This study aimed to develop regression equations to predict energy expenditure (kcal) for RE involving each major muscle group using commonly measured demographic and exercise variables as predictors.

Methods: Fifty-two healthy, active subjects (27 men, 25 women, age 20-58 yr, height 174.

In recent years, the Evans function has become an important tool for the determination of stability of travelling waves. This function, a Wronskian of decaying solutions of the eigenvalue equation, is useful both analytically and computationally for the spectral analysis of the linearized operator about the wave. In particular, Evans-function computation allows one to locate any unstable eigenvalues of the linear operator (if they exist); this allows one to establish spectral stability of a given wave and identify bifurcation points (loss of stability) as model parameters vary.

Platinum is state-of-the-art for fast electron transfer whereas carbon electrodes, which have semimetal electronic character, typically exhibit slow electron-transfer kinetics. But when we turn to practical electrochemical devices, we turn to carbon. To move energy devices and electro(bio)analytical measurements to a new performance curve requires improved electron-transfer rates at carbon.

Listening to familiar music has recently been reported to be beneficial during recovery from stroke. A better understanding of changes in functional connectivity and information flow is warranted in order to further optimize and target this approach through music therapy. Twelve healthy volunteers listened to seven different auditory samples during an fMRI scanning session: a musical piece chosen by the volunteer that evokes a strong emotional response (referred to as: "self-selected emotional"), two unfamiliar music pieces (Invention #1 by J.
